An open letter to Florida friends and family.

I love you. But, I think tough love is in order. Some wonder why I don't revere my homeland and am utterly disgusted at the thought of the town in which I grew up. I think the answer lies in a single word, inspiration. Being home for a week, a week that happened to come at a time when I've done some of the most growing as a person I could do. I visited home to see that absolutely nothing had changed. Frankly, I was reminded exactly why I left in the first place.

"This is the place where dreams come to die." I found myself repeating that line time and time again while trudging the main drag that feeds in and out of the mild civilization called Jacksonville. If you know me, you know I'm a dreamer and I'm going to figure out ways to make this world conform to make it mine. I may be an unreasonable man, but I am unwilling to accept the way the things are. So, I'm going to do something about it.

I recently watched a brilliant movie about the coming of age of bright young girl in Britian. At one point in the movie the girl was having it out with her father, or perhaps her lover who was quite older than she. In any case, the following words came from her lips; "Character is action. You're nothing if you don't do anything." This 16 year-old girl so perfectly summed up the sentiment I hold in regards to those I care about and call my friends at home. Take from it what you will, but I am urging you to do something, leave this world a better place than you found it. I'll leave it at that.

Sincerly,

Eric Andrew Mackey
